Walk of Fame in Arnhem

18 October '11

Yesterday afternoon we joined the ceremony to honour the first historic personality in Arnhems Walk of Fame.

Already 10 years ago we learned that in the house we lived in at the Bakkerstraat in Arnhem, Sir Philip Sidney passed away.

This 32 years old confidant of Queen Elizabeth, was wounded in the Battle of Zutphen. To recover, he was taken to Arnhem, where he stayed in the house at the Bakkerstraat. Unfortunately he died a few weeks later on the 17th of October 1586.

Now, exactly 425 years later, a ceremony was held yesterday. The mayor of Arnhem, together with an ancestor of Sir Philip Sydney, uncovered a monument. The monument shows a strip with text, to memorize the life of Sir Philip Sidney.

Attached an antique engraving representing the Battle of Zutphen, ca 1580. This engraving is part of our collection.
